New Balance 860

The New Balance 860 is the lighter sequel to the New Balance 760. It’s a stability shoe built for heavy runners in search of support on the inside of the shoe, as well as overpronators in search of extra protection.

This stability shoe features an overlay on the outer shell that locks down the laces tightly for a snug fit. It boasts an added layer of soft rubber for more cushioning, which caters to the big and heavy steps of the bigger runners.

In an upgrade to the 760, the New Balance 860 is re-shapped on the outsole to give the foot a longer amount of contact with the ground, to facilitate a more stable heel to toe-off. It weighs in at 12.2 oz. for men, and 10.1 oz. for women, typical for this type of shoe.

Users of the New Balance 860 noted that it was supportive despite not being bulky at all. Other users wanted a more secure lacing system. Disgruntled uses said it had less features than its predecessor, while satisfied users said it had great arch support and durability. One user noted it looked new even after 140 miles of use. Testers of the shoe praised its snug heel fit, but were annoyed at its overly wide toe-box and stiff forefoot. Despite being a rigid shoe at the forefoot, testers noted that it still provided a decent ride with a good transition.

The New Balance 860 retails at $105, but can be found on online for as for as low as 85 USD.

In conclusion, the New Balance 860 aims to please big runners, but ends up delivering mixed reviews to those who use it because of its stiff toe, wide toe-box, and lack of noticeable upgrades from its predecessor. Curious runners should try and compare the fit of the 760 with the 860 before buying.
